Alamo Gold Youth Scholarship Program

When Is It Given?
The ALPEA awards a $500 youth scholarship annually at our Alamo Gold Fall Classic & Futurity.  The 2005 Alamo Gold Fall Classic & Futurity marked the first time this scholarship was given.  2007 will mark the 3rd year.  It will be awarded at our Alamo Gold Fall Classic held on October 28, 2007 in Seguin, TX at the Guadalupe County Fair Grounds (on Hwy 123-business).

Who Qualifies To compete For It?
Any PHBA youth member qualifies to compete for this scholarship.

How Does It Work?
The scholarship is awarded to the youth with the highest total points added up from all categories.  All categories means from the youth walk/trot 5-9, the youth 5-13, the youth 14-18, and the open classes. Yes!  The Open classes will count towards this scholarship!  Understanding this can very well make the difference in the outcome.  It is VERY possible to have one high-point youth (5-13) winner, another high-point youth (14-18) winner, and yet another scholarship winner.
The points are tabulated on a one horse/one rider system.  The pointing system is based on how many horses are in the class (not the PHBA pointing system).  For Instance, if 2 riders are in a class - the 1st place rider will get 2 scholarship points and the 2nd place rider will earn 1 scholarship point - even though no PHBA points were given due to the size of the class.  The youth must show in at least 1 halter and 3 performance classes to qualify.
The purpose behind these rules is to encourage youth to compete in as many different classes as possible.  Let's say Joe Smoe is very good in Western pleasure, but not crazy about riding English.  Then we have Jane Doe who likes to ride English, but doesn't like western because she just doesn't have much experience.  These rules are meant to encourage both Joe Smoe and Jane Doe to compete in both.  Joe end up helping Jane out ( and vice versa) by making her 'special' class a success while gaining some well-rounding experience for himself.
ALPEA wants to encourage all youth to try new things.  The trick with this scholarship seems to be entering in as many classes as possible.  It makes it a true all-round youth award in this respect.  The important part to note is the open category.  You will get some scholarship points for these classes even if you end up lowest in the standings.  The open category does not count towards the youth high-points awards, but it does count towards the scholarship.

How Is This Scholarship Awarded?
The winner of the Alamo Gold Youth Scholarship will be given an award certificate for the scholarship.  When the youth reaches the age and starts college, all they need to do is contact ALPEA with this information.  A check will be issued in both the name of the youth/student and the college.  This is to ensure the integrity of this awards programs, as well as, all parties involved.

What Happens With The Award Money Until Such Time As The Youth Actually Uses It?
All scholarship money is kept in a separate savings account until it is issued to the youth/college.  The interest earned off all scholarship money stays within the scholarship account.  The interest will not be added to any scholarship awards.  The reason for this is to allow the funds to grow; And, hopefully, the scholarship amount will be able to increase as time progresses.
