Disaster Evacuation Program (DEP)

The Disaster Evacuation Program (DEP) is deisgned to help horse owners in need during times of emergency.  We will strive our best to find temporary shelter for all horse owners that come our way; However, ALPEA members are first priority and  guaranteed a safe place to evacuate their horses.
During the time of evacuation, the important thing is to get on the road and start the long haul.  Call us from on the road if you can.  We will need to know some important information: 1) How many horses are coming?  2)What type of horses need a place? - 2 stallions, 1 mare w/foal, 3 weanling, etc.   3) Can they be pastured all together in a herd?  4) Are there any special needs or circumstances for any of them?
We have many people who volunteer out there extra stalls, pastures, round pens, etc. to make room in times of emergencies.  The one thing we MUST insist on is that the horses appear in good health and have a CURRENT negative coggins.  These people that make room are not all members ( some are neighbors, friends, family...) and we all appreciate their kind hearts and helping natures;  However, if your horses cause any damage, you will be responsible for that damage.  Our program partners are held harmless to any injuries your horses may sustain during their stay.
This program is not intended to gain any monetary profit off those in need.  ALPEA knows that the extra, unplanned expense of the evacuation and loss of work alone is a hardship on the budget.  For this program, you are not to be expected to pay any type of stable/board fee.  You will be expected to provide your own food and look after your own horses.  You will also be expected to be reasonable at cleaning up after your horses.
The ALPEA continually compiles a list of people willing to volunteer their extra space.  Then when an evacuation happens, we recontact these people to ask how much space they can spare at that specific time.  As horse people are always adding and subtracting to their herd numbers, we do not lock in a set amount of stalls, pastures, etc.  We simply keep a list of those willing to participate in this program and then organize and execute this plan.
